| Inclement weather fails to dampen great racing at Allman Park |
|
Despite the unfavourable weather an enthusiastic crowd of 600 racegoers enjoyed a great afternoon’s racing on Saturday 20 June. The trend of horses coming from far and wide to Warwick continued with stables represented from Coffs Harbour to Doomben and most points in between. Bookies reported an even result with several good results and a couple of heavily backed winners arriving to take the cream off their day. Race one, the Horse & Jockey Hotel Motel Plate over 800m was taken out by locally trained Outski. Terry Catip prepares the Hayil 4Y0 on the track and the gelding was having his first start. The winner was ridden by Charlene Bumstead and scored by 1.75 lengths from Balboa Star with a further 1.75 lengths to Kristil Puha. The race was marred by an incident at the 550m where jockey Steven Galvin was dislodged but not seriously injured. Incidentally, the unplaced Coffs Harbour trained Starker is for sale. The Celestial Dancer 3YO finished tenth but had endured a six hour float trip that morning and was having only his second start. The second race, the Southern Downs Regional Council/ Brisbane Bloodstock 2YO Maiden Plate was won in grand fashion by Ulmarra ($7), a Monashee Mountain 2YO trained in Toowoomba by Darryle Brusnahan . Jockey Skye Bogenhuber took the gelding to the lead and never looked in danger scoring by 4.5 lengths from Inverell visitor Big Events and Al Dente, the $1.70 favourite. The runner up, an Arena gelding is trained by Leon Fox in Inverell who brought two horses to the meeting. Big Events finished gamely and will only get better with age and opportunities at longer distances. The pattern of women jockeys winning continued in the third, Raheen Stud QTIS Maiden with Alisha Winfield punching home Beaudesert trained gelding Coolbadah Comet ($10) by two lengths from $3.50 favourite Bella Sea and Tyrconnell. The winner is trained by Geoffrey Hardy and looked impressive. The fourth horse National Soldier, a new addition to the Gary Schwenke yard flew home and will break through soon. Tony Gollan, fresh from a treble at Dalby on Friday trained the fourth winner Double Rise ($6) in the Rupert’s Bar & Grill Class B over 1350m. Ridden well by Cameron Dixon, the Piccolo gelding finished over the top of early leader Wide Bay ($15) scoring by a length with a short neck back to Samantha’s Jewel( $9). The winner’s stall was greeted with a loud reception by the owners of Gee Whiz ($4), winner of Race 5 Ergon Energy Class 3. The large band of owners had chartered a bus to bring a celebration party to the track and they were not disappointed when their 6YO gelding charged home by 1.25 lengths. Ridden a treat by Gary Geran the winner was very well backed and the group took plenty out of the betting ring. Locally trained Poncho ($17) was a gallant second with Nattsukee ($2.70 fav) third a further length away. Nattsukee was chasing his fifth straight win but found the company a bit rich. The winner is trained by Gary Geran’s wife Kylie at Oakey and was a good effort as the horse had not raced for several months.
